SUMMARY

Objective of this VHVs work was to implement projects and activities of monitoring, preventing and controlling of non-transmitted diseases, under a concept of village of health management, at Bann Don Kaem, Tambon Yang Kam, Nong Rue district, Khon Kaen province, 1997-2014. It was shown that an innovation of prototype alcohol-drink free village had been achieved successfully. Networks to monitor, prevent and control non-transmitted diseases, including little magicians (160 students of 7 schools) had been formed, as well as a campaign launched to villagers. The project of self-care and changing health behaviors had been launched among 150 villagers, which had been processed to be the village of changing health behaviors. Elder club was also formed within the community with continuous activities. In addition, several projects and activities had been performed following the concept of village of health management such as youth networks to protect consumers in health, projects to support organic vegetables, garbage bank, and development of expert VHVs. These lead to a chance for villagers to improve their health and life quality. The prototype alcohol-drink free village of Baan Don Kaem has become to be implied as Tambon scale.

SITUATION AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM

Bann Don Kaem, Tambon Yang Kam, Nong Rue district, Khon Kaen province, is a medium-sized village, in which villagers had been faced off several problems for a long time e.g. poorness, inappropriate health behaviors, and their life styles being involved in alcohol drinking and gambling. All these causes led them to become incidences of non-transmitted diseases such as diabetic and hypertension. These problematic issues inspired the author to implement projects of monitoring, preventing and controlling of non-transmitted diseases within her community, aiming to improve villagers’ health and life quality.

FRAMEWORK(S) /SCOPE

Projects and activities had been operated at Bann Don Kaem, Tambon Yang Kam, Nong Rue district, Khon Kaen province, under the framework of village of health management between 1997 and 2014.

OBJECTIVE(S)

To implement projects and activities of monitoring, preventing and controlling of non-transmitted diseases to improve villagers’ health and life quality at Bann Don Kaem, Tambon Yang Kam, Nong Rue district, Khon Kaen province.

PROCEDURE

Operation Plan ; Planning was held following community committee with collaborative organization with Yang Kam health promoting hospital, Tambon Yang Kam legislative authority, sub-district headman, village headmen, VHVs teams and prototype leaders of health behaviors, under the concept of village of health management. The prototype leaders of health behaviors, had been selected from whom, being acceptable health behaviors and trusted by villagers.

Action ; The author displayed himself as a projects’ leader, and a key organizer to collaborate with other local authorities and sectors.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment Criteria Projects and activities of monitoring, preventing and controlling of non-transmitted diseases, that had been done effectively within the community.

Out-Puts
• An innovation of prototype alcohol-drink free village had been performed successfully, in which alcohol-free label would be marked at every funeral events of the community.
• Networks to monitor, prevent and control non-transmitted diseases, including little magicians (160 students of 7 schools) had been formed, as well as campaigns launched promoting activities toward villagers.
• The project of self-care and change of health behaviors had been conducted among 150 villagers, which had been processed to be the village of changing health behaviors.

Out-Comes
Problems of non-transmitted diseases at Baan Don Kaem, have been handled to be monitored, prevented and controlled. The community of Baan Don Kaem got its successfulness to be a prototype alcohol-drink free village, and took an advanced step to become alcohol-drink free Tambon. Most villagers have realized themselves to the significance of non-transmitted diseases, and have gotten their opportunities to improve their health and life quality.

FACTORS EFFECTING ITS SUCCESSFULNESS

Author MRS. YUPARAKSA PROMNOK, devoted herself as a volunteer and a local leader to develop her community since 1997.
