SUMMARY

Objective of this VHVs work was to implement Thai traditional medicine and folk know-how in health for community health management at Baan Nong Hwa, Tambon Nong Hwa, Kumpawapee district, Udonthani province, between 1995 and 2014. With capable collaboration with Tambon Nong Hwa health promoting hospital, a service of Thai traditional massage had been processed to provide to villagers, approximately 80 persons a month. Campaigns to promote herbs as edible and medicinal purposes, had been done regularly. Thai traditional medicine and health promoting center, and Thai massage club, were founded within the village as a host for knowledge transferring, service providing to villagers, and an orientating center for visitors. In addition, a traditional medicine network was initially formed within the village, which later be extended to the entire area of Udonthani province (152 persons). Networks’ activities had been arranged monthly for knowledge and experience sharing. An innovation of Kala Chuk used for exercise in benign hemi-paralyzed patients, and an innovation of mobile sauna suit used in traditional medicine, were invented to be applied widely for villagers’ use. Thai traditional medicine and folk know-how in health has been implemented successfully with community health management, enabled the chance to villagers for better life quality.

SITUATION AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM

Thai folk know-how, particularly massage and traditional medicine, has been stated as one of Thailand’s exclusive wisdoms, transferred from generation to generation for a long time. Generally, it has been processed to implement for health management, especially basic first aid, and health rehabilitation. In case of the author, she devoted herself to share and contribute her experiences in folk know-how and traditional medicine, which had been transferred from her parents, as community health approach at her hometown, Baan Nong Hwa, Kumpawapee district, Udonthani province. This aimed to contribute folk know-how and medicinal medicine, to consolidate with community health service, providing the improvement of villagers’ health and life quality.

FRAMEWORK(S) /SCOPE

To carry out projects and activities of Thai traditional medicine and folk know-how in health for community health management, at Baan Nong Hwa, Kumpawapee district, Udonthani province between 1995 and 2014.

OBJECTIVE(S)

To operate projects of Thai traditional medicine and folk know-how in health for community health management, aiming to provide the improvement of villagers’ health and life quality.

PROCEDURE

Operation Plan ; Projects and activities of Thai traditional medicine and folk know-how in health for community health management, were held following collaborative organizing with Tambon Nong Hwa health promoting hospital. A varieties of projects and activities such as traditional massage for health, a campaign to promote herbs as edible and medicinal purposes, foundation of Thai massage club, and traditional medicine network, were planned collaboratively with health care officers and village health volunteers (VHVs).

Action ; The author displayed herself as a projects’ organizer, and a key actor in massage service to villagers.

ASSESSMENT

Projects and activities of folk know-how and traditional medicine, that had been applied usefully in the community health service.

Out-Puts
• A service of Thai traditional massage held in collaboration with Tambon Nong Hwa health promoting hospital, had been delivered to villagers approximately 80 persons a month.
• Campaigns to promote herbs as edible and medicinal purposes, had been done continuously, and had to be done practically among villagers.
• Thai traditional medicine and health promoting center, and Thai massage club, were founded in the village as hosts for knowledge transferring, service providing to villagers, and an orientating center for guests.
• Traditional medicine network was initially formed in the village, which later extended to the whole area of Udonthani province (152 persons). Networks’ activities have been arranged monthly for knowledge and experience sharing.
• An innovation of Kala Chak used for exercise in benign hemi-paralyzed patients, and an innovation of mobile sauna suit used in medicinal medicine, were applied widely for villagers’ use.

Out-Comes
• At villager level; almost villagers have realized themselves for the usefulness of Thai traditional medicine and folk know-how, that be conveyed to them such as accessing to traditional massage service, and using innovation of Kala Chak and mobile sauna suit. Herbs as traditional vegetables and medicinal purpose are always achieved in their life style. This lead to significant improvement of villagers’ health and life quality.
• At community level; folk know-how and traditional medicine that had been consolidated firmly with community health service at Baan Nong Hwa, is a good example of community health management. Thai traditional medicine and health promoting center, Thai massage club, traditional medicine network, and a massage service’s center at Baan Nong Hwa health promoting hospital, are likely community’s institutions to strengthen and back up its successfulness, which later extended to other area of Udonthani province. Herbal products used in traditional purpose, is likely villagers’ opportunity, to get more incomes.

FACTORS EFFECTING ITS SUCCESSFULNESS

Author MRS. KRUE NETRAPAKDI, an expert in folk know-how and traditional medicine, deserved herself as a village health volunteer since 1994.
