SUMMARY

Due to the 2004 Tsunami disaster in southern region of Thailand, mental problem has been stated as one of important issues to be concerned. Objective of this operation project was to forming networks to solve villagers' mental problems at Baan Laem Makharm, Tambon Khao Mai Kaew, Si Klao district, Trang province, in 2013. Pregnant women and childhoods, child, youths, mature, elders, handicrafts, chronic diseases patients, and psychiatric patients were target groups of this project. Activities such as experience telling, tale telling, self-assessment of stress, “to be number one” activity, knowledge promoting campaign, were applied appropriately in to each group. From 2-question screening protocol, 2 elders, 1 handicraft and 3 mature ones, were found to be depression, which then processed for further treatments. In the hotline program formulated, 12 individuals had approached for counseling. The innovation “ three love power to protect happiness” introduced to use in this project, was helpful and satisfied by villagers.

SITUATION AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM

Due to the Tsunami disaster in 2004, thousands of people through west seashore of southern region of Thailand were affected and suffered suddenly, in which some people progressively developed to be depression, and psychiatric in any cases. Although time left for more than 9 years, the problem had still existed in the community. It is necessary to conduct some helpful projects to fix or decrease severity of the problem. This led to the initiation of mental community project toward villagers of Baan Laem Makarm, Moo 5, Tambob Klao Mai Kaew, Si Gao district, Trang province.

FRAMEWORK(S) /SCOPE

To contribute the mental health project within the area of Baan Laem Makarm, Moo 5, Tambob Klao Mai Kaew, Si Gao district, Trang province.

OBJECTIVE(S)

To help villagers whom suffered from depression and psychiatric patients.

PROCEDURE

VHVs Teams and Community Mental Health Networks ;  ;The community area was divided into 4 sectors, as being responsible by assigned VHVs teams. All VHVs must be attended in community mental health training courses, supporting by Si Gao district hospital and Tamnon health promoting hospital of Laem Makarm.

Mental Health Promotion ; Target groups of this work were pregnant women and childhoods, child, youths, mature, elders, handicrafts, chronic diseases patients, and psychiatric patients. Mental health promotion as community’s network was also formed as the combination of religious based activities.

Prevention of Mental Health Problems ; The two-question screening protocol had been introduced to screen mental health problems in villagers. Hot-line counseling center was established as villagers needed.

Treatment for Psychiatric Patients and Rehabilitation were also prepared in readiness, for carrying out, if necessary, as well.

ASSESSMENT

The Innovation of Three Love Power to Protect Happiness  :  was invented to serve the promotion of community mental health as 1) to empower the relationship among families, 2) to follow up psychiatric patients, and 3) for counseling.

Out-Puts ;  Screening of Psychiatric Disorders using two-question protocol, has been found that 2 elders, 1 handicraft and 3 working adults were found to be stress, which had been processed for further treatment.

All villagers had been carried out to take care their mental health status. There was no suicide case, and mental health of villagers was better improved. The hot-line counseling center was very useful for villagers (12 cases approached for counseling).

Out-Comes ;  This holistic community management on mental health, arranged by community collaboration and community network formation, was successfully in the handle of villagers’ mental health problems. Villagers’ life quality has been improved, whereas psychiatric patients have been processed for required medical treatment and rehabilitation.

FACTORS EFFECTING ITS SUCCESSFULNESS

Author MRS. VIMOL NUANSRI, deserved as a VHV for 13 years, and her self-determination to help villagers with mental health problems, is a key factor of successfulness.
